Cahill's 'Over Easy' is just that

And we are all the better for it.

A funny thing happened on the way to her “new” career in music.

It’s a long story.

Actually, it was a career in journalism spanning five decades that was the cause of the interruption.

As a reporter, editor and photojournalist at The Milwaukee Journal and later Cat’s Paw Communications, Cahill’s writing life put her singing life on hold.

With her release of Over Easy in 2013, Cahill is back, baby, and better than ever.

She put herself through college playing gigs at night to pay for tuition at Marquette University.

There she earned her B.A. and an M.A.

Cahill is backed by the Dan Dance Trio + One, a group that has curriculum vitae in the field of music in the Greater Milwaukee area that is second to none.

The appropriately named Dance pounds the keys while the Wisconsin Conservatory’s own Dave Bayles mans the sticks.

Jeff Hamann is on bass and the sax play of Jason Goldsmith rounds out this “trio.”

Cahill definitely kicks it old school on this drop.

Her vocals have a satiny, smooth quality with just the right amount of vibrato.

You hear a little Dinah Shore with some Sassy Sarah Vaughn thrown in for good measure.

From Gershwin to Marvin Hamlisch and everything in between, she takes on old and new classics alike.

There is one thing I have to quibble over.

The subtitle, Music for a Mellow Mood, doesn’t cut it for me as you don’t have to be in a mellow mood to enjoy it.

Instead, it leaves a warm glow inside the listener and her takes on Bye, Bye Blackbird/Bill Bailey and Birth of the Blues are hardly what one thinks of as mellow.

The 14 tracks on this effort are a delight and are available at and can be heard on Pandora in the very near future.
