In a candid admission that his goal is to provide a lead for other cities to follow, a key member of the Burlington council made it clear that he is intent on imposing citizen disarmament edicts on all Vermonters, the Vermont Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs reported Friday.
“At the Burlington City Council Meeting on Monday, Councilor Norm Blais, the driving force behind the gun control ordinance campaign in Burlington, proved what [we have] stated from the beginning,” VFSC explained. “Burlington [is pursuing] the dismantling of the Vermont Sportsmen's Bill of Rights so that towns and cities all over Vermont will have the power to enact gun control, hunting, shooting, fishing and trapping regulations. We would then face a patchwork of conflicting municipal ordinances.”
VFSC directed attention to the council member’s floor speech, recorded at 51:21 into the meeting video. Aside from making absurd denials that no Constitutionally-recognized rights or state preemption proscriptions would be violated by Burlington adopting a host of edicts on its own, Blais expressed his desires for what would follow.
“The opposition, the fear, the threat is that if this passes in Burlington, God forbid other Vermont towns might follow suit,” Blais declared. “And that is not a fear, from my perspective that is a hope.”
Let them secure one beachhead, and they’ll simply use that to launch their next assault. As Gun Rights Examiner noted in its October 14 report, those measures will be ever-expanding and continuing and erosive, with the ultimate goal being something Blais and his ilk will never define as “enough,” because “gun control” is but one milepost in the “progressive” plan for more comprehensive control over every aspect of citizens’ lives.
In related news, on Friday VFSC posted its response to a letter from the City of Burlington regarding the rights group’s Freedom of Information Act request. Two days earlier, The War on Guns blog posted some further updates, including a photo showing the difference in the numbers of grassroots supporters motivated to make their views known at council meetings.
