  • Below is an updated and corrected version of this report. The original article, posted on January 13, was based on information given to retailers before yesterday's "official"announcement. Some of the information was incorrect. Sorry for any confusion.

Upgraded versions of the legendary 1992 all-star event, “Bob Dylan: The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration,” are scheduled to be released by Sony on March 4 in the U.S. It will be available on Blu-Ray and DVD for the first time, and the 2 CD set will also feature additional material.

Here’s the blurb:

On October 16, 1992, an impressive and eclectic group of artists gathered at Madison Square Garden in New York City for the purpose of celebrating the music of Bob Dylan on occasion of his 30th anniversary of recording. Bringing together musical greats as far-flung as Johnny Cash and Eddie Vedder, The Clancy Brothers and Lou Reed, the four hour show celebrated a truly remarkable lifetime of songs in front of a sold-out audience of over 18,000. Warmly dubbed the “Bobfest” by participant Neil Young, the show was broadcast around the world and featured a cast of musical notables performing carefully chosen and often surprising selections from the incomparable Dylan songbook. At evening’s end, the man of honor himself appeared on stage and gracefully brought it all back home again. In a world where all-star celebrity gatherings have become commonplace, the Bob Dylan celebration stood out as, first and foremost, a legitimately memorable musical event.

According to Sony, the new “deluxe edition” of the CD features updated artwork, remastered audio, and two previously unreleased bonus tracks from rehearsals (Eric Clapton’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right,” and “I Believe In You” by Sinead O’Connor).

The DVD and Blu-Ray versions feature a previously unreleased new High Definition (16 x 9) video master, remastered audio, and 40 minutes of “Behind The Scenes” material, including previously unreleased rehearsal footage and interviews.

29 songs are included in the regular DVD/Blu-Ray program, with three performances originally integrated into the original 1993 VHS now listed as “bonus tracks”: “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat" by John Mellencamp, “Boots of Spanish Leather” by Nanci Griffith with Carolyn Hester, and “Gotta Serve Somebody” by Booker T. & the M.G.’s. The latter two songs were performed before the start of the pay-per-view broadcast. (See below.)

The liner notes were written by music journalist Bill Flanagan.

In December, Sinead O’Connor expressed, in a post on her website, how pleased she was about “I Believe In You” being included on the CD.

There are tracks performed at the event not included on these releases. When the box set “Paul Simon 1964/1993” was released in September, 1993, Simon commented in the New York Times that Columbia (representing Dylan and Simon & Garfunkel) and Warner Brothers (Simon’s label at the time) traded licensing rights on these releases to allow material to appear on rival labels. Seven songs performed that night are not included in any format, most likely due to either artists unhappy with their performance, contractual conflicts, or "technical difficulties." See songs listed in BOLD LETTERING under "COMPLETE ORIGINAL CONCERT LISTING" below.
