Bob Dylan’s Europe tour begins, complete with dancers and statue busts on stage

Bob Dylan’s first European concert of 2014, which took place earlier today in Cork, Ireland, had a couple of surprises, just not in the set list department.

According to reports posted on Facebook and Bob Links, two people danced on stage during the first song after intermission, “High Water (For Charley Patton).” This was apparently part of the show, not an impromptu idea by some uninvited members of the audience. Time will tell exactly what was going on here, but according to Bob Links, it was performed by a man and a woman.

There was also at least one, possible two, statue busts on stage. Early Dylanologistic forensics indicate the one on Dylan’s piano was of Athena (a.k.a. Pallas Athene), who according to Greek mythology, was the virgin goddess of reason, intelligent activity, arts and literature, seen as the embodiment of wisdom, reason, and purity. Or maybe it was someone else. According to PopShotsNYC, the statue seen on the cover of Dylan’s latest release of new material, 2012’s “Tempest,” is the “sculpture of the woman (as) part of the fountain of Pallas Athene outside of the Parliament building in Vienna, Austria.”

As for the set list, it remains the same model as the one used used on recent tours, but with Dylan’s voice sounding much smoother than usual, based on the audio of early videos posted online. It was not much of a surprise, really, considering Dylan's sultry new version of “Full Moon and Empty Arms,” from his upcoming album, as posted on Dylan’s official site.
