Blood Red Buddy Poppy Raises Millions

Buddy Poppy
Buddy Poppy

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly.

Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved, and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields National Memorial Day Parade

By Col. John McCrae.

On Memorial Day, Fly your flag with honor, give a small donation for a Buddy Poppy and wear it proudly. Remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom in this country. It’s so important to remember that Memorial Day is about the sacrifices – it’s not just a 3 day weekend.

Little red paper poppies are handed out by members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars prior to Memorial Day. You can find them in front of stores, VA’s and all around the cities across our country. The tiny red flower has helped raise millions of dollars which goes to Veteran' rehabilitation and service programs and also supports the VFW National Home for orphans and widows of our nation's Veterans. The poppy goes back to the poem by Col. John McCrae titled "In Flanders Field" which describes the blowing fields of poppies among the battleground of the fallen.

The Poppy was adopted as the official memorial flower in 1922 by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. They are assembled by disabled and disadvantaged veterans who are paid for their work, providing them with a form of financial assistance and giving them a feeling of belonging by doing the job.

When you see the Veterans with the Poppies, remember to them it’s all about veterans helping veterans and living up to VFW’s motto of “Honor the Dead by Helping the Living.” The Poppy reiterates that the VFW will not forget the sacrifices of all men and women who have served and still serve today.

VFW locations are everywhere. Call your local VFW and they can give you information in regard to the Buddy Poppy.
