Sunday, Bill Cosby appeared on CNN with Don Lemon and spoke openly about black fathers and how they need to step up and take care of their families; the news has created an Internet buzz Monday. Actor and comedian, Bill Cosby has always been open with his opinions. His CNN interview wasn’t about leaders in the black community, but it quickly moved to the topic.
See the video to the left. Don Lemon asked Cosby about the thinking of the black leadership.
Bill Cosby responded:
I think it has to come from the universities. I think, women, strongly because when you see 70 percent, in research, that says they are the leaders of the household, what we need is for people to realize I want to raise my kid. I want to go back and get my three kids. I want to take on that responsibility. I want to love my children.
A recent sociology study showed that there are more female head of households in African-American families than any other group including Caucasians and Asians. In the U.S., as many as 70% of African-American families have a female head of household.
Bill Cosby has openly spoken about how he thinks the behavior of black people is lacking. Earlier this year, he wrote:
Your children are walking the streets loudly using profanity feeling kind of powerful as they storm the subway or whatever. I'm not asking people to not be children, but this is anger stuff. They get on the subways and they're disrespecting elders. What happened to the old saying, "I didn't raise you like that."
Bill Cosby has accused of not taking steps or using himself as an example in the black community, but Sunday he got to the root of the problem and said that black men need to step up and take care of their families.
Now, about this time, this is when you hear the no-groes jump up and say 'Why don't you talk about the good things?’ Because the good things happen to be taking care of themselves pretty well. We are trying to help those genius, those not genius, people who deserve, because they are human beings on this earth, in the United States of America, we are trying to get them in a position so they will understand and want to.
Don Lemon has also heavily criticized black culture and he has said that “black men need to make big changes in their lives, including pulling up their pants, graduating high school, and limiting the number of children born out of wedlock.”
Bill Cosby said Sunday that he thought it is difficult for black men to hear this because he thinks they are embarrassed to admit that he is right. Cosby said that he has been there and understands that way of thinking:
The reason why I'm giving you this information is because I was living in the projects. I was not taking care of myself in terms of managing my education, and once the door opened and I saw quote, unquote, the light, I started to become very successful.
