Tonight's "Biggest Loser" had a medical shocker for Ruben Studdard, an update on one of last season's teen participants and a risky weigh-in for a member of each team. And it offered the first elimination of the season. But first ...
Jillian sat down with Craig, who she saved from elimination at the weigh-in. He revealed that his dad died at age 32 and he blamed himself for his father’s death, even though he was only 10 years old. “This is not how you honor your father,” Jillian said, waving her hand toward him.
Ruben and Dolvett met with Dr. Huizenga who delivered the news: Ruben has type 2 diabetes. All three blood tests showed sky-high blood sugar levels. But it only made Ruben more thankful to be on the show and more determined to change.
Quote of the week, from Ruben: “I have even more inspiration to keep going,” Ruben told Dr. H.
The challenge: It’s the first challenge of the season and giant dice are involved. But first, Alison informed the contestants that at the weigh-in only one person’s weight would count for the entire team and the person would be chosen by their trainer rolling that die. The winning team in the challenge gets a second die. The challenge involves water, buckets, giant dice, large tanks and everyone tied to each other with a rope. Every roll of the dice tells each team how many buckets of water they can carry to the tank, and the blue and red teams were neck and neck. Blue team won the challenge and happily walked off with their pair of giant dice.
We got an update on Lindsay, one of the kid ambassadors from last season. She’s doing great and has inspired her big brother to lose a bunch of weight, too.
That last-chance workout was tough – Hap was puking, Jillian’s team was heaving medicine balls and Dolvett’s team was pushing that sled.
Weigh-in and elimination: Since Bob’s team won the challenge, he’ll be able to choose from two people to have one weight count. Dolvett chose Tanya, Jillian chose Fernanda and Bob rolled Chelsea and Hap, and chose Hap. How’d they do?
- Chelsea: 6
- Holley: 10
- Matt: 8
- Bobby: 10
- Hap: 13
- Craig: 11
- Marie: 5
- Tumi: 8
- Jay: 11
- Fernanda: 2
- Jennifer: 9
- Ruben: 10
- Rachel: 8
- David: 11
- Tanya: 4
Red and blue teams were safe and the white team had to let someone go. Fernanda lost the smallest percentage and her weight went below the red line so she was eliminated. It's unclear whether the show will stay with this red-line elimination but it certainly cuts down on time.
The update: We’ll have to wait until next week to see how far Fernanda has come. In "real time," the show has already filmed its final weigh-in, so quite a few weeks have gone by.
Next week: The contestants get to call home and recharge their motivation batteries.
