Betty Lynn Played Thelma Lou on "The Andy Griffith Show"
Betty Lynn, the Christian actress who played Thelma Lou on televisions popular 1960s sitcom "The Andy Griffith Show," was robbed at a shopping center in Mount Airy, NC, the birthplace of gospel artist and television star Andy Griffith and the town that inspired Mayberry. The 83-year-old Lynn, who played Deputy Barney Fife's girlfriend, Thelma Lou, moved to My Airy in January of 2007 because she had been robbed three times in her previous home outside of Los Angeles.
Carroll County Man Robs Actress Betty Lynn
According to a story in today's Mt. Airy News, a man from Carroll County, Va., was being held in the Surry County Jail on a $10,000 bond for allegedly taking Betty Lynn's wallet from the actress.
Betty Lynn Saw Mt. Airy as a Safe Place to Retire
In conversations I had with the actress in September at the 2007 Mayberry Days, Betty Lynn said she was thankful to be away from LA because she had not felt safe there anymore due to of all the crime. She commented that she felt like Mt. Airy would be a safe place to retire.

Betty Lynn was already familiar with the Mt. Airy area having participated in the annual Mayberry Days festival in Mt. Airy for many years. Lynn also was no stranger to Nashville having performed at Mayberry Reunions at Opryland several times in past years.
Mt. Airy Home of Actor Andy Griffith
Mt. Airy is a small town near the Virginia/North Carolina border where Andy Griffith grew up and went to church before heading off to college with plans to become a music minister. Although he denied Mt. Airy was the basis for Mayberry in early interviews, more recently he had publicly admitted that Mayberry had some of its origins in Mt. Airy.
