KENTUCKY DERBY CHOCOLATE PECAN PIE

LAST MINUTE RECIPE for Kentucky Derby Chocolate Pecan Pie has toasted pecans or walnuts, bourbon, classic pecan pie filling with brown sugar and butter, and gourmet chocolate chips in a flaky pie crust. The Kentucky Derby Chocolate Pecan Pie can be whipped up in no time, making this is great last minute race recipe. The pie freezes well, so consider making two and freeze one for later! This recipe is very similar to my Chocolate Pecan Pie Recipe without the bourbon.

Kentucky Derby Chocolate Pecan Pie Recipe

NOTE: This recipe makes a large amount of batter, so be sure to use a 10-inch deep dish pie pan. A stoneware pie pan with high sides works well. When shaping and fluting the pie crust, make sure to bring the sides up high enough to hold all the Kentucky Derby Pecan Pie filling.

  • Recipe for 10-inch Single Crust Pie Crust (Click on the Best Ever Pie Crust Recipe. This recipe makes enough for 2-4 crusts. You can divide the recipe in half or freeze the extra crusts.)
  • 1/2 cup butter (1 stick), melted
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 3/4 cup Karo light corn syrup
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1/4 cup bourbon
  • 3/4 cup gourmet chocolate chips
  • 1 1/4 cup toasted pecans or walnuts, shelled and chopped in half if desired

 How To Make Kentucky Derby Chocolate Pecan Pie

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Roll crust according to my directions in the Best Ever Pie Crust Recipe, or use a store bought pre-baked pie crust, line a 10-inch deep dish pie pan with the dough, and flute the edges as desired.
  • In a large mixing bowl, on medium speed with whisk attachment, whip butter, sugars, corn syrup, eggs, vanilla and bourbon together until frothy.
  • Remove bowl from mixer, and fold in chocolate chips and pecans or walnuts. Blend well.
  • Pour into prepared pie crust and bake at 350 for 50-60 minutes or until set.
  • Serve warm, or cool completely before serving with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
  • Yields 8-10 slices.

    I'm having a problem with the ingredients overfilling the pie pan, I don't know if I'm doing something wrong? Or should I be using a deeper type of pie pan?

    Hi Charley,

    Yes, use a deep-dish pie pan for this pie, that way the pie crust will come up higher when it's crimped. If you have extra filling left over, you can also fill a few small single serve casserole dishes, and bake that along with your pie.

    I plan on making this for Christmas. But, I think I might use Phillo(spelling?) dough for the crust because I am short on time. Do you think it would do well? Also, I tried a store bought one - it was delicious - but, I think it had walnuts in it. Which do you think is better - walnuts or pecans?

    I think Walnuts are better and toast them in a skillet before putting into the recipe.

    I have used A lot of recipe's for Kentucky Derby Pie and this one is by far the best. Everyone loved it for thanksgiving and requested it for Christmas dinner. It will be included as one of my favorites.

    Thanks for the recipe ~ iThis makes a delicious traditional Derby pie when made with WALNUTS.. otherwise it's a very good bourbon chocolate pecan pie.

    Don't know if my comment will be in time to help anyone else making these for their Derby parties toda; but, I specifically went out and bought two deep dish pie plates (glass 9.5 inches) to make this recipe based on the amount of batter it claims to make. Made my pie crust for two pies and set aside. Made batter and it barely filled one pie plate! I was like what in the world ... is this going to expand or what? Didn't want to risk that, so I poured it ALL into one shell (like I said barely enough to fit) and ran to the store for more pecans to make my second pie that I had promised to bring to a party. Made another batch and a half of batter to make sure I had enough. In my opinion, this recipe would be perfect for one 9 inch pie. Compare the recipe to the one on allrecipes http://allrecipes.com/recipe/chocolate-bourbon-pecan-pie/detail.aspx and I think you'll agree. I really needed two and a half times this batter to make two glass deep dish pies!

    Have been to many a Derby Party in L'ville and taken many a pie, but this version that I made for our "Derby De Mayo" party this year is the BEST!! It is not overly sweet (but don't kid yourself.....it is sweet and does have calories!!! :-) ) and there is just a perfect essence of bourbon (Maker's Mark, of course!) I was very pleased with this recipe and will put in my keeper notebook for years to come!
