If you’re looking for a mouth-watering dessert that you can whip up in no time, this apple cobbler is it. Buttery topping over sweetened baked apples, here is a recipe for apple cobbler that will leave everyone wanting second helpings. It’s almost like the dessert version of comfort food.

Apple season is upon us and the orchards are gearing up for it. Since Pennsylvania is one of the top apple-producing states in the U.S., there are tons of orchards to visit. Soergel’s Orchards just north of Pittsburgh has several varieties of freshly picked apples in their market now. There’s no better feeling than to buy directly from the growers, so visit your local orchards or farmers markets.

There are so many delicious apple recipes that it’s hard to choose between them. This one is from a former co-worker. It’s simple, easy to make, and your family will love it. It’s an easy recipe to double, as well. Just use a 9x13 baking dish (or even one a little larger), instead of the 9x9 size.

Best Apple Cobbler Recipe

Ingredients for Best Apple Cobbler:

  • Peeled, cored, and sliced apples (enough to half-fill a 9x9 baking dish)
  • 2 tsp. vanilla (divided)
  • 1 ½ cup sugar (divided)
  • ½ tsp. cinnamon
  • 2/3 cup butter, melted and cooled
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup flour
  • ¼ tsp. baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • ½ cup nutmeats (optional)

Directions for making the Best Apple Cobbler:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Butter the bottom of a 9x9 baking dish. In the bottom of the prepared baking dish, put in enough apple slices so that the dish is half-full. Sprinkle the apples with 1 tsp. of the vanilla. Then sprinkle ½ cup of the sugar and ½ tsp. of cinnamon evenly over the apples.

Combine the melted butter, 1 egg, and the remaining 1 tsp. of vanilla. Add the remaining 1 cup sugar, the flour, baking powder, and salt -- mix together. Stir in nutmeats, if using. Pour the batter evenly over the apple slices.

Bake for one hour at 350 degrees. Serve warm or at room temperature.
