Benghazi investigation: Rep. Gowdy says he has evidence of cover up

Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., on Friday night and Saturday made the rounds on Fox News Channel saying that he's in possession of evidence of a systematic and intentional cover up being orchestrated by the Obama administration in order to withhold information from congressional panels probing the Sept. 11, 2012, Benghazi attacks that killed four Americans. Gowdy is expected to lead a special House committee charged exclusively with investigating the terrorist attack in Libya and the alleged efforts to withhold information.

"I have evidence that not only are they hiding [the truth], there's an intent to hide it," the South Carolina Republican told Fox News anchorman Eric Shawn.

"I can't disclose that evidence yet, but I have evidence that there was a systematic [and] intentional decision to withhold certain documents [regarding the Benghazi attack] from Congress — and we're just sick of it," he said.

Speaker of the House John Boehner, R-Ohio, said Friday that the House would vote on a resolution to create a special committee sometime this week, according to news outlets.

The 49-year-old Gowdy, served as a criminal prosecutor before deciding on a career in politics. In only his second House term, he is taking on a monumental task of trying to penetrate the secretive and crafty minions who surround President Barack Obama. Gowdy leveled his allegations when he was told that Secretary of State John Kerry is expected to be subpoenaed by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

That panel, which is chaired by Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., wants Kerry to reveal why the committee didn't receive a 2012 email that revealed Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes coached then-Secretary to the U.N. Susan Rice to play up the angle that the Benghazi attack was a response to an anti-Muslim video circulating on the Internet.

The email, which was released Tuesday by a nonpartisan watchdog group Judicial Watch, was not among the material the oversight committee had received in response to its subpoena. The committee actually received the document last Tuesday from Judicial Watch officials who had to battle the Obama administration in federal court to get the email.

“Now we know the Obama White House’s chief concern about the Benghazi attack was making sure that President Obama looked good,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton in an Examiner news story.

“And these documents undermine the Obama administration’s narrative that it thought the Benghazi attack had something to do with protests or an Internet video. Given the explosive material in these documents, it is no surprise that we had to go to federal court to pry them loose from the Obama State Department.”

Kerry, a former Democratic Party Senator and presidential candidate, said he would cooperate with congressional investigators about the terrorist attack, which left U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens, information officer Sean Smith, and former Navy SEALs Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods dead.

Gowdy claimed that the Ben Rhodes email was the deciding factor in Boehner's decision to move forward with a special investigative panel.
