Beatles quietly release rarities compilation to thwart copyright edict

“The Beatles Bootlegs Recordings 1963,” a collection of 59 tracks, quietly became available Dec. 16 through iTunes basically in Asia, but not, as of this writing, in North America or the UK. We found it in New Zealand, Indonesia, Lao, Nepal, Macau, Vietnam, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Micronesia, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Mongolia, Fiji, Cambodia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan. It will probably show up elsewhere Tuesday.

The digital-only album includes outtakes and demos that have been previously available on collectors' bootlegs, but not on a legitimate release to the general public. The limited availability will thwart fans initially who want to get ahold of it.

The album is broken down between 15 Beatles studio outtakes, including takes 5, 6, 8 and 9 of “There's a Place” and take 2 of “I Saw Her Standing There,” and 44 more live BBC tracks in addition to those already on “Live at the BBC” and the recently released “On Air: Live at the BBC, Volume 2.” Its release was first reported last week.

The reason for it is a move by the Beatles to protect the copyright on these recordings. According to European law, if the music is released by the end of the year and before the 50-year-anniversary of their first publication, those copyright protections will be extended 20 years. If not, they'll go into the public domain, which has already happened with "Love Me Do" and "P.S. I Love You." Bob Dylan came up with his own solution to the problem releasing the dryly titled "The 50th Anniversary Collection: The Copyright Extension Collection, Vol. 1."

The advance notice of the release is exceptionally short by Beatles standards, which usually announce releases months in advance. That's not the case here, probably because Apple is not really happy about having to do this.

Update: Early reports say album is major upgrade
