Bay Area Hiking: Feb. 6-12

It may not be spring, but it certainly is perfect outside for hiking in the San Francisco Bay Area. Here are a few hikes, or nature-related events, that will put the spring in your step!

  • Oakland Urban Paths invites participants to “Rock and Walk” on Sat. Feb. 11, 2012, to explore Oakland’s geology and quarry legacy. Geologist Andrew Alden of Oakland Geology will lead you on this unique hike to visit and learn the former Rockridge quarry and then on to other sites at Davie Tennis Stadium, Dracena Park, and the Morcom Rose Garden. Free. Meet:  Southeast corner of the Rockridge Shopping Center (Broadway and Pleasant Valley Ave., Oakland) parking lot at 10 a.m.  Hike will be approx. 3 hours/5 miles. Heavy rain cancels, light rain doesn’t. Dogs OK!
  • The 16th Annual SF Bay Flyway Festival will be Feb. 10-12. This popular, free event, produced by Mare Island Heritage Trust, offers more than 60 guided hikes as well as tours, exhibits, live bird visits, educational presentations, art and optics vendors, and an art show. Some of the wildlife viewing areas that will be featured are not open to the public other times during the year. Our Bay wetlands are home to or visited by more than 1 million shorebirds and hundreds of thousands of waterfowl annually. Location: 500 Connolly St, Vallejo, CA 94590, Phone: 707-557-9816.

You’ll enjoy the tafoni sandstone wonders and the shaded forest of the mid-peninsula. Five miles, moderate pace. Meet: Skeggs Point, a Caltrans vista point on the east side of Skyline Boulevard near Woodside, about 4 miles north of La Honda Road (Highway 84) and 1.5 miles south of Kings Mountain Road.
