Continuing with recent examples of, shall we say, unusual ways to celebrate Valentine's Day, the Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce has organized an inaugural event that it hopes will entice participants and result in an annual effort to improve the city's image.

Responding to feedback from local business owners, the Chamber yesterday announced, via an e-mail blast to its members, associates, and interested parties, plans for the first Annual Business Cleanup on Valentine's Day. Co-sponsored by Keep Bakersfield Beautiful, Vision 2020, and the Bakersfield Downtown Business Association, the event addresses recommendations that litter removal and cleanliness will increase business in the community.

The groups are scheduling the event on Valentine's Day as a way for businesses to show how much they love their city.

The idea for the event came as a result of the Chamber's first ever Business Walk conducted on January 31, 2013, across several industries and areas of Bakersfield. It was designed to gain a better understanding of the local business community and to see how the Chamber could help businesses be more successful. Businesses representing 62 percent of 450 surveyed responded, the results of which may be found in the Business Walk Report.

Free supplies including gloves and trash bags, as well as trash hauling, will be provided for those who register by February 11. Additionally, participants will be eligible to win a free I Love Bakersfield gift basket for their office by sharing photos of trash collected on the Chamber's Facebook page, accompanied by the hashtag, #Ilovebakersfield. The photo that generates the most "likes" wins the prize.
