Bak Middle School of the Arts is a magnet middle school in West Palm Beach, FL. The school's campus was formerly that of the Dreyfoos School of the Arts, a high school. The first auditions took place in July 1997. The campus property of Bak Middle School of the Arts was also home to North Shore High School from 1965-1989. In 2007, the new campus was completed and the original buildings were demolished. The school accepts students from all over Palm Beach County. Students may audition for two out of five art areas: communications, dance, music (consisting of band, keyboard, strings, and vocal arts), theater, and visual arts.
Bak is one of Palm Beach County School District’s most prestigious schools. Bak is known to have an association over the years with Julliard, one of the most prestigious musical arts schools in the world that offers a summer camp for aspiring jazz artists. Upcoming (at Bak Annual Dance Concert), all dance majors at Bak will perform ballet, modern, jazz, and tap works created for them by the Bak dance faculty. There will also be two pieces from American Dance Legacy Initiative housed at Brown University: Forces by Erica Pujic and Limon Etude by Carla Maxwell, artistic director of the Limon Dance Company.
Bak Middle School of the Arts is bursting with expertise, creativity and an abundance of talented individuals. Several Bak Middle School of the Arts dancers have competed in nationally televised dance competitions this year. Former Bak student Eliana Girard won first place on, So You Think You Can Dance on Fox. Madison O’Connor, an eighth grader at Bak, recently placed second on Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition on Lifetime and is now back in class and will be on stage with the rest of the dance department in the Bak Annual Dance Concert. Mitchell Tobin, seventh grade dance major at Bak, just opened as Billy Elliot in the touring production of Billy Elliot. Look for him at the Kravis Center in March.
The Bak Annual Dance Concert will take place Feb. 1, 2013 at 7 p.m. and Feb. 2, 2013 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Bak Mainstage Theatre. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students at seatyourself.biz.
