News that a baby elephant cries for five hours after its mother rejected it and tried to stamp it to death shortly after birth is just about the saddest elephant news ever. A Sept. 13 Daily Mail report says that the horrifying incident happened at the Shendiaoshan Wild Animal Natural Reserve Area, in Rongcheng, Shandong province.
Initially zookeepers believed that the mother's stamping the calf was an accident. However, they realized it was on purpose when they returned the baby elephant named Zhuangzhuang after treating its injuries and the mother elephant attempted to stamp the baby again.
A zoo spokesperson said,
"The calf was very upset and he was crying for five hours before he could be consoled. He couldn't bear to be parted from his mother and it was his mother who was trying to kill him. They have made a good bond. We don't know why the mother turned on her calf but we couldn't take a chance."
How incredibly sad to hear that this baby elephant cried for five hours. So far nobody knows for sure why the baby's mother stomped and rejected it just after birth. It's incredibly sad that it happened again as soon as zookeepers attempted to reunite the pair.
It makes you wonder if the baby elephant cried over the rejection or because the injuries hurt. Perhaps it was a combination of both things.
