Baby dies sleeping in car seat prompting Canadian official to warn parents of dangers

A new warning for parents of very young babies... too much time in the car seat can be deadly.

A two month old baby in Quebec died after sleeping for only an hour in his car seat positioned in his crib. The coroner determined the baby suffocated and said the baby died of SIDS as a result of sleeping too long in a seated position, accodring to the Canadian news outlet CBC.

The CBC goes on to say:

The coroner says "there are risks to leaving a child sleeping in any seated position. He encourages parents to put their children to sleep horizontally at all times, preferably in a crib."

"He also advises parents to move their babies frequently when they are in a car seat in a vehicle. He recommends parents take their children out of the seat every hour while on a long trip."

This warning then would also apply to putting a newborn in a seated position swing. There are swings that allow babies to lay down to sleep.

Ok so SIDS is NOT suffocation, not at all, SIDS is unexplained death of a child, suffocation means they couldn't breathe...2 different things.

ALSO if the child is properly retrained in the carseat and the carseat is at a 45 degree angle the child is perfectly safe in a carseat. In fact many infants NEED to slep at the 45 degree angle for reflux issues. Preemies have to pass a hour long carseat test before they can drive home with mom and dad....they would NOT do this if it was unsafe.

Sounsd like this baby wasn't restrained properly and suffocated....not SIDS and NOT the carseat, its user error...no one wants to blame the parents but leanr how to use a carseat safely!!!

Yeah, suffocation is not SIDS if that were so it wouldn't be unexplained and if car seats were so dangerous, more babies would die in them and this is the first I heard of. The parents were stupid and why would they put him in the car seat in the crib?? what's really going on?? I agree the baby wasn't restrained properly and suffocated.

I agree...Mine alway fell asleep in the car. if he is restrained correctly there shouldn't have been any problems...mine loved to sleep in car seat. and I agree with the others why would you put the car seat in his crib...and if this was not user error why havent more suffocations happened kids have been in car seats for years....
