The question of who will raise a baby whose parents were killed early Sunday in a car crash on the way to the hospital became a moot point on Monday. The newborn, who was never named, succumbed to his own injuries and was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital Center, The New York Times reports.
The baby’s mother, who was erroneously reported in this space to have been in labor, was actually 24 weeks pregnant. She and her husband were heading to a hospital because she was concerned that she could no longer feel the baby inside uterus.
But the journey was cut short shortly after midnight when the livery cab in which they were traveling was broadsided by a speeding car. Both parents, Raizy and Nathan Glauber, were killed in the accident.
The baby was delivered prematurely and intubated. Despite early reports that the child was in serious condition, the baby’s initial survival was hailed by friends and family as a precious gift. Many, the Times reports, visited the hospital where the newborn clung to life — then headed back to a synagogue in Brooklyn for the funeral of his parents: It is the custom of Orthodox Jews to bury the dead as quickly as possible.
Even now, just hours after his death, the baby’s funeral arrangements are being consummated, and soon he will join his parents. The circle of tragedy has been completed.
