Babies 101: How many times a day should my newborn have a poopy diaper or a wet pee diaper?
Counting the number of pee and poop diapers of your new baby is all par for the course. Your baby's doctor will expect you to do so to make sure all is on track.
So how many poops should you be looking for? Barbara Picard, mom and nurse practitioner at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, says:
Often a newborn will stool with most, if not all, feeds for the first 2-4 weeks of life, especially if breastfeeding. Given that, they do not always do that. Some newborns only have 1 or 2 soft stools a day, and some may even go 2-4 days in between bm's. This is also normal. They should always be soft. If hard and pebblish then constipation is likely. As you can see it does vary some.

And what about pee diapers?
Sometimes its hard to tell if a newborn is peeing cause the poop is in the same diap, or its just a small amount. The diapers I'm using, which are the same as the ones my hospital used - Pamper's Swaddlers- have a nifty little strip that turns from yellow to green when baby pees, making it easier to keep track. Nurse Barbara says be prepared for lots of changes. "Wet diapers are usually mixed in with the stool so often not changed separate from the stool. If you have a baby though that does not stool with most feeds and stools less frequently, you will see typically a newborn will have 8-12 wet diapers a day," Barbara says.
