Today, The Slightly Warped Website posted this image on their Facebook page with the comment, “is a woman her size really going to eat a whole baby?”
Blogger Jen McCreight created Atheist Barbie. “Finally," she proclaimed, "a Barbie doll that represents my every day life." Since its conception, the image has gone viral appearing on cheezburger.com as well as various comedy pages on pages on Facebook. On her blog, Blaghag.com, McCreight explained her inspiration for the macro image.
Three years ago, Episcopal Reverend Julie Blake Fisher crafted Rev. Barbie; she used the doll in youth ministry to demonstrate various vestments. McCreight noted that although the modified doll was not officially recognized by Mattel, it was embraced by the press and had a fan club on Facebook despite the sex scandals then (and now) rampant in the Catholic church. One article presumed that if there were more women in power at the church it could have lead to early intervention on behalf of the victims of the abuse.
McCreight felt compelled to introduce a new influence suggesting avoidance (and mockery) of churches and religion as whole. Her Barbie totes a copy of The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins and wears a shirt that reads: “Stand back, I'm going to try SCIENCE.”
McCreight continues to blog, but has moved her current writings to her new blog.
