Tim Lambesis, co-founder, frontman, singer and guitar player of the Christian metalcore band, As I Lay Dying, will be going to prison for six years after pleading guilty in San Diego Superior Court to hiring a hitman to murder his wife, Meggan Lambesis. Lambesis’ guilty plea was part of a plea arrangement that helped keep the rocker out of jail for a maximum sentence of nine years. The jail sentence for the singer was handed down on May 16 in San Diego.
Rolling Stone reported yesterday that Lambesis and his wife had been married for eight years prior to Lambesis trying to have her killed. The couple has three adopted children together. His six year sentence includes a 48 day credit for time already served.
The singer was arrested on May 7, 2013 when it was alleged then that he hired a hitman to kill his wife. According to Radio.com, the hitman Lambesis hired turned out to be was an undercover cop. Lambesis reportedly paid the undercover police officer posing as a potential hitman $1,000 to do the dirty deed.
Lambesis gave the supposed hitman pictures of his wife along with the security alarm access codes to her house. Additionally, Lambesis also provided “a list of dates when he would be away with the couple’s three adopted children in order to establish an alibi.” Meggan had filed for divorce from her Christian rocker hubbie in September, 2012, citing irreconcilable differences.
Of the 80 people present at Lambesis' sentencing, more than 36 of them were in court wearing yellow felt hearts to support Meggan. Lambesis' As I Lay Dying bandmates, Nick Hipa, Phil Sgrosso and Josh Gilbert, were also present for the frontman’s sentencing.
Meggan spoke at the sentencing, claiming that Lambesis' behavior had changed in the months leading up to his arrest on May 7th, 2013. The day before he was apprehended, he had texted her asking for the social security numbers of their three adopted children. In regard to the murder plot, she referenced Lambesis' favorite line in Total Recall, when Arnold Schwarzenegger's character shoots his wife and says, "Consider that a divorce." (Lambesis has a side project called Austrian Death Machine, for which he does a Schwarzenegger impression and titles songs with references to the actor.)
Hollywood.com shared that Lambesis was charged with one count of solicitation to commit murder and one count of conspiracy to commit a crime. The rocker has been under house arrest since pleading guilty to his murder for hire plot. The remaining members of As I Lay Dying have gone on to form the new group Wovenwar, featuring Oh, Sleeper's Shane Blay on vocals.
