It all began with a Garmin . . . or to be more specific it all started with the great old maps people began throwing away as the popularity of GPS's rose. Cadence Mapes, of Peterborough, New Hampshire, couldn't let all those paper maps become landfill fodder and so she started collecting them and turning them into beautiful jewelry and unique home decor items.
Along with her collection of maps Cadence Mapes eclectic eye picks out other bits of discarded beauty- vintage buttons, antique type writer keys, old oragami papers and sheet music. All of these become fodder for her art.
Of particular interest are her popular bangle bracelets. They're not just pretty- they're locally made through and through. "All wood in bangles are now handmade either by me or another artisan here in New England. This allows for more ability to create shapes and sizes AND allows me not to have to purchase mass-produced wooden pieces from faceless factories." says Mapes.
