For months now the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront has been undergoing major renovations to their lobby, dining and beverage spaces. The goal is something more interactive and social allowing guests to work, play and interface. The renovations open the lobby up like a great room with nooks and crannies for drinking, socializing, lounging, grab and go food, dining and even a private dining room and executive meeting lounge. Plenty of 42 inch plasma televisions, WiFi and electrical outlets and USB ports at the bar stay in tuned to the conveniences the public is demanding.
Let me interject a little personal experience right here. I’m just back from Women Chefs and Restaurateurs conference in Chicago. We stayed at the Intercontinental Hotel right on the Miracle Mile, a grand dame of hotels. They were amazing; service, the room, banquets BUT they had no lounge space what-so-ever in the lobby. There were no couches or chairs except a handful near the side entrance. We seemed forced into the Michael Jordan lounge or Starbucks if we wanted to interact and socialize. In the past, the lobby has always been where conference goers interacted before events, after dinner. A salute to Baltimore Marriott Waterfront’s keen eye to spend the millions to revamp this not so old hotel and make it more social, like home.
Keeping in that “home” theme, their new restaurant, Apropoe’s (a play on Baltimore native Egdar Allen Poe) opens to travelers and Baltimorean’s on April 1st. During an earlier sneak peek at the coming cuisine of Apropoe’s, Executive Chef Carlos Gomez and Executive Sous Chef Danny Alvarez both stressed that wanted the food to feel more like home style food, not overworked or over-stylized plates. The cuisine is Maryland based with seasonal themes and local produce. In fact, they maintain a tiny roof top garden at the hotel.
The bar is now more stylized with craft brews, barrel aged cocktails, juices and mocktails. And wine, they will be offering different sized pours – 3, 6 and 9 ounces. Separate table, communal tables, sofas and chairs available for the intimate conversation to a robust gathering of friends.
Well you know me, I’m all about the food and from what I tasted, Apropoe’s won’t disappoint from lite bites in the lounge the likes of bacon and blue cheese wrapped dates to specially spiced nuts. Apropoe’s pork belly sliders, chopped kale salad, crab cake with cream corn with Brussel sprout and bacon salad, uniquely fried shrimp, braised pork shank with spaetzel –all home spun food.
In conclusion, how I see it, for me – even as a Baltimorean, not a visitor, I would definitely find the lounge an ideal meet up space for drinks and lite bites before grabbing a movie, consider Apropoe’s a destination spot for dinner (your parking at PMI lot is validated for up to three hours) or great spot for casual meetings.
