Tony Perkins, head of the Family Research Council, an anti-gay Christian hate group, is urging Christians to boycott Betty Crocker because the company donated wedding cakes to three gay Minnesota couples who were married after the state legalized same-sex marriage.
Right Wing Watch reports Family Research Council president Tony Perkins asked listeners to boycott Betty Crocker on his Sept. 12 radio broadcast. An outraged Perkins spoke out against Betty Crocker and its parent company, General Mills, suggesting a link to the National Organization for Marriage’s boycott campaign at DumpGeneralMills.com.
Perkins told his radio listeners "At Betty Crocker, the only thing they're mixing up is their priorities." Calling Minnesota same-sex marriages "counterfeit marriage," Perkins urged listeners, "When you're at the store, think outside the Betty Crocker box!"
The Advocate reports Perkins and his anti-gay Christian allies are also promoting boycotts of Starbucks, Target, and JC Penney for the corporations' inclusive employment policies, gay spokespeople, and support for pro-equality candidates.
Tony Perkins is the head of the Family Research Council (FRC), a Christian fundamentalist organization that has a long history of demonizing members of the gay and lesbian community. As such, the FRC has been recognized as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
