Anti-Communist leader Lech Walesa: Obama has failed, U.S. no longer leads world

In an interview that aired Wednesday on CNN, Lech Walesa, the Nobel Peace Prize-winning former president of Poland best known for his fight against Communism, said Barack Obama has failed to reclaim America's role as a world leader.

"When he was elected... there was great hope," Walesa told CNN. "We were hoping Obama would reclaim moral leadership for America."

"That failed," he added.

In terms of politics and morality, he said, "America no longer leads the world."

"America did not regain its leadership status," he continued. "We were just lucky there were no big conflicts in the world."

Walesa, who supported Mitt Romney in the 2012 election, called the situation "dangerous" and said that "we are awaiting a president who will understand that."

In 1983, Walesa won the Nobel Peace Prize after overthrowing the Communist government in Poland. Seven years later, he became the country's first democratically elected president.

"I managed to destroy a bad system," he told CNN. "Now we must be excellent at building new things. It doesn't take that much."

After meeting Romney in 2012, Walesa effectively endorsed him in his bid to unseat Obama.

"I wish you to be successful because this success is needed to the United States, of course, but to Europe and the rest of the world, too," he said, according to a pool report.

The 70-year-old Walesa is the subject of a documentary that will be considered for an Academy Award this year, Newsmax said.
