Animal rescuer struggling to help street dogs in Brazil

Jan Cabral is trying desperately to help the street dogs in Brazil. However, it has been a struggle, with little money and many dogs to save. She constantly updates her blog (written from her dog’s perspective) about the stray dogs with pleas for help.  For instance, just last week Jan posted about seeing a couple of street dogs locally. One little dog has a tumor on his testicles and his friend, another dog has a limp.  Unfortunately, Jan does not have the money to get medical care for these dogs. (Photos of these dogs can be seen here.)

“He was actually licking the tumor when they arrived and dad got a close look. He will soon have maggots in his testicles because the tumor is seeping a bloody fluid. One way or another he is doomed. His big friend seems to love him a lot. She seems to be trying to take care of the poor little fellow.

If only we could have a clinic for street dogs and treat the problems as they appear and spay and neuter them then the problems would diminish.

As mom and dad drove home the little male with the tumor was playing Russian Roulette in the traffic. This is Brazil..................”

On Monday, Jan visited the city of Teresopolis, which suffered a devastating flood in January. She said that the situation is improving and more animals got adopted at an event, however the legacy of the disaster continues for humans and animals. To see photos of the city and some dogs recued from there, click here.

Jan has her own shelter and is also on the board of directors of another animal charity in Brazil ("Grupo Estimacao") that is helping in Teresopolis to save animal disaster victims.

Jan started a blog in 2008 to raise money for the animals in their shelter and it took until 2010 to obtain the first donation. To read Jan’s blog and support her efforts, click here.

Photos of some street dogs in Brazil can be seen in the slide show to the left. What do you think of Jan’s efforts to help these dogs? Can you help?
