Andy Kindler performs at the 2011 Boston Comedy Festival

Andy Kindler is set to perform at this year’s Boston Comedy Festival on November 11 and 12, an event that’s not only exciting for Boston, but for Kindler as well – it will mark the first time (at least that Kindler can recall) that the comic has graced the stage in our fair city.

“I love Boston – I’m visiting some relatives while I’m there, so it will be family, fun, comedy, friends – and I’ve always wanted to play there,” Kindler tells me.  “I’ve always heard about the Comedy Studio. In the nineties, I went there when I was recording Dr. Katz, so I’ve spent some time there, but never for stand-up.”

Kindler, a frequent guest and correspondent for The Late Show with David Letterman, is well-known as the man who delivers the State of the Industry address each summer at the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal.  Over the past sixteen years, he’s become infamous for his scathing attacks on the world of entertainment, including the previously taboo practice of making fun of his fellow comedians.  Just as the comedy boom of the nineties was imploding, Andy wrote the “Hack’s Handbook” for National Lampoon, a “how to” guide which satirized and exposed tired comedy formulas.

While the Boston Comedy Festival will bring together some of the best and brightest in the comedy industry, fans can look forward to more from Kindler than just his take on comedy as a business.

“I will also be doing jokes about shoes and nuns and non-industry stuff,” Kindler says with a laugh. “My stuff about the industry kind of permeates what I do in a way, and then I do a lot of things about deconstruction – I’ll do the joke, I’ll talk about the joke, I’ll analyze the joke, I’ll put the joke up on a lift – so I lot of the stuff I do relates to comedy and how I feel about comedy. I love self-deprecation and people who don’t take themselves too seriously.”

Kindler, who was recently seen as a judge on the 7th season of NBC’s Last Comic Standing, has two half-hour Comedy Central Presents specials under his belt, as well as having recurring roles on Disney’s Wizards of Waverly Place and Fox’s new hit animation, Bob’s Burgers – a hilarious series which has been renewed for an additional thirteen episodes.

“We’re doing the second season now, so I know I’m on a few episodes for sure,” Kindler tells me. “Animation I guess takes – I know for some reason I thought it took a short amount of time now –but it takes long. It takes a long time. I’m not sure when it’s coming back, maybe January. They have thirteen episodes, and I think they’re talking they may get nine more. I love doing it, those guys go back to Dr. Katz, and so Loren Bouchard goes back to that, who also did Home Movies [an Adult Swim series created in Watertown, MA].”

Kindler’s other noteworthy credits include the HBO Young Comedians Special, Late Night with Conan O’Brian, The Daily Show, Dr. Katz Professional Therapist, Home Movies and The Larry Sanders Show, and he’s is often recognized for playing the life-affirming character “Andy” on the CBS sitcom, Everybody Loves Raymond.  He’s also gearing up for more appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman, so be sure to stay tuned for those in the near future.

Boston is more than ready to embrace Andy Kindler with open arms, and having him as part of the 12th annual Boston Comedy Festival is sure to make this year’s festival even more memorable.

“I’m hoping that this will launch a huge presence for me in Boston,” Kindler states. “I don’t know if that means I’ll like, get a key to the city or get my own theater, like in Branson.  There are certain cities I feel I resonate with, but I’m probably jinxing myself – I’ll probably get booed. People will probably think I’m a Yankee fan.”
