At PaleyFest, actor Dylan McDermott, who appeared in the first two seasons of FX series "American Horror Story," suggested a Salem witch theme as part of upcoming season 3. When discussing how perfect the addition of Kathy Bates is to the cast, he said, "She really is. All the witches of Salem ... there's plenty of them!" Click here for more details.
Now actress Frances Conroy (who appeared in seasons one and two and is slated for three) confirmed rumors about New Orleans, a city renowned for witchcraft and dark magic, as a setting. In an Entertainment Tonight story published online today, when asked about the upcoming season, Conroy said she will appear in 10 of 13 episodes and that she doesn't know anything else except "that it's going to be in New Orleans."
In a TVLine story, creator Ryan Murphy said Bates' character in the upcoming "AHS" season tops her portrayal of psychopathic Annie Wilkes in "Misery," saying, "Oh, Kathy's never [played] someone this bad." He said her character is based on "a true-life character." Not a first for "AHS," which has featured The Black Dahlia and Anne Frank.
With that information and now validation of the New Orleans setting, a Zap2It story today guesses that Bates may portray Madame Marie Delphine LaLaurie, who tortured and murdered black slaves in the early 1800s. LaLaurie maintained a position of prominence in New Orleans social circles until tortured slaves were discovered after her Royal Street mansion caught fire.
Although Murphy says season three will be set primarily in modern times, he's also confirmed flashbacks, which could certainly include LaLaurie's era. He's also said three American cities will be involved, so Salem, mentioned by McDermott, may be one of the others besides New Orleans.
Fans are hoping more will be divulged at the "AHS" panel at PaleyFest on March 15, which will include with Murphy, Co-Creator Brad Falchuk, Executive Producers Dante Di Loreto and Tim Minear, and show stars Jessica Lange, James Cromwell, Lily Rabe, and Evan Peters.
