After a January thaw, cold and snow return to West Michigan

A January thaw brought several days of warm air and rain helping to melt some of the snowpack. West Michigan sees a return to winter weather Tuesday into Wednesday. The Grand Rapids National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the counties along and north of line from Muskegon to Mount Pleasant from 11 AM Tuesday until 1 PM Wednesday. Locations in the advisory could see total snowfall accumulations of 5-9 inches. Areas south of that line will likely observe 2-5 inches of new snow. The wind will increase from the west tonight causing some blowing and drifting of the fresh snow as well as reducing visibilities at times.

The weather will quiet down by Wednesday afternoon but another disturbance will bring a burst of snow by Wednesday night into Thursday.

While temperatures have been in the upper 30s and lower 40s for the last few days, we dip back below freezing by Wednesday. This cold air will likely hang around for a couple of weeks.
