Adele's album '21' keeps hold on top-selling title for 2012

Adele achieved a new milestone when it was announced that her album “21” finished as the top seller for 2012 just as it did for 2011. This is the first time this has happened since Nielsen SoundScan began music sale tracking, and this is quite the honor for the popular musician. Billboard shared the details Jan. 3.

“21” debuted in March 2011, and it has been in the top 40 every week since then. Adele's album sold 4.41 million in 2012 after selling 5.82 in 2011. Taylor Swift's “Red” took home second place for 2012, selling 3.11 million. One Direction's “Up All Night” came in third with 1.62 million sales.

USA Today notes that with over 10.2 million sold so far, Adele's “21” becomes the 21st album to sell over 10 million in SoundScan's history. While CD sales were down in 2012, digital sales are rapidly increasing, throwing new twists in the race for top honors.

Were you surprised to hear that Adele's “21” took home the top spot again for 2012? Which album did you think was the hottest commodity in the past year? Fans are anxious for some new music from the musician, and there is some buzz that 2013 could bring just that. She is, however, still in the early stages of enjoying her new baby boy, so a new Adele album may take a bit of patience.
