Academy Award nominee James Cromwell was arrested Thursday morning after he interrupted a University of Wisconsin (UW) Board of Regents meeting, demanding that painful experimentation to cats be stopped, according to a Feb. 7, 2013 media release from PETA.
73-year-old Cromwell, a long time PETA activist, and Jeremy Beckham of PETA charged into the meeting to voice their opinion about the controversial experiments on a cat named Double Trouble. The cat is featured on PETA’s page, in which a “stainless steel post was screwed to her skull so that her head could be immobilized during experiments.”
Holding up signs and photos of the tortured animal, Cromwell yelled at board members, "Shame on UW for mutilating and killing cats!"
Cromwell and other PETA activists were surrounded by university police, and they were eventually arrested disorderly conduct.
According to PETA, the controversial Double Trouble experiments were hidden from the public but after three years of fighting, along with a lawsuit, the disturbing photos of the cat experiments were eventually released. Those photos were the same ones being held up by Cromwell and Beckham during the protest.
"The University of Wisconsin may think that grant money matters more than animals' suffering, but the public who unwittingly funds this cruelty demands an end to these hideous experiments," says Cromwell. "My friends at PETA and I will continue to call on UW-Madison to stop cutting into and killing cats in this useless experiment."
The university animal resource center issued this statement following the protest:
"Today's events are just another attempt by outside activists to draw attention to a cause. They have attacked and distorted this research, which has very real benefits for people who are deaf, from every angle imaginable. Exhaustive independent investigation by the USDA, which regulates the use of animals in research, concluded that PETA's allegations are baseless."
