Israel Goodman "Izzy" Young, a legendary figure in American - and Swedish - folk music, will be making a rare speaking appearance in London Friday evening.
"A Night With Izzy Young" will take place July 6 at the Dentist, 33 Chatsworth Rd, London. Young will be "talking about his extraordinary life in music and his work at the Folklore Centre promoting the likes of Patti Smith, Tim Buckley, Dave Van Ronk and Emmylou Harris."
The 84 year old Young was the former owner of Greenwich Village's Folklore Center, and a man instrumental in jump starting the career of a young Bob Dylan. Young reportedly lost about $200 promoting Dylan's first concert at Carnegie Chapter Hall in November, 1961.
Dylan wrote "Talking Folklore Center" the following year, and also remembered Young in his 2004 book, Chronicles, Volume One. Interestingly, last year, Dylan played the Ericsson Globe in Stockholm, on the fiftieth anniversary of his Carnegie Chapter Hall debut. Young closed the Folklore Center and moved to Sweden in 1973, where he's lived ever since.
Young is described on the event's promotional poster as "Raconteur, poet, and promoter of the first public performances by Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Patti Smith and Tim Buckley." Izzy will be interviewed by his old school mate, Tom Paley of the New Lost City Ramblers fame, and live music will be provided by Paley, Sam Lee, Jason Steele, and Tank & Trumpet.
In correspondence with the proprietor of the Dentist, Phil Brunner, Young recently wrote, "I can read poetry, talk about folk music. I usually ask for questions so that I don’t get into a rut, which I don’t do anyway. It can put me on the spot, and that is when I am best. In fact, I’ll bring some artifacts - copies, that is - and I would like to read some poetry, my own, and two Dylan songs written for me, a poem by Allen Ginsberg, et al. I’ll go through my mixed up shelves and cardboard boxes, so I will be prepared with lots of stuff, aside from my active brain."
The price is £5, and advanced reserved tickets are now available. Check out the club's Facebook page on how to purchase tickets.
UPDATE FROM THE DENTIST:
Thank you to everyone who has bought tickets for tomorrow - to those who haven't already it's really recommended you do so soon as we are fast reaching capacity. Those that don't already have tickets by 7 o clock may well have to wait for the ticket holders to get into the garden.
This event began as a talk and has evolved into a world class bill of current folk music. We will not be raising the ticket price but we will be putting in place a donation system on the night which will go direct to Izzy Young and those who have come to celebrate the man and his work.
