It's official. A 71-year-old Wisconsin woman broke the Guinness World Record for planking Wednesday. Betty Lou Sweeney held the abdominal plank for 36 minutes and 58 seconds.
The previous world record was 33 minutes and 40 seconds.
Sweeney is a Wisconsin native who set the record with her Anytime Fitness trainer cheering her on at the Stevens Point location. Anytime Fitness has locations all over the country, including Huntsville.
For Betty Lou, the accomplishment capped off an amazing two-year journey. In 2009, Betty Lou was severely overweight and nearly died from complications from an infection that went septic and shut down her kidneys.
When she defied the odds and survived, she pledged to make a major life change, get off her medications and start enjoying life -- and she did just that. She joined her neighborhood Anytime Fitness and began working out six days a week with personal trainer Dave Candra.
Today, more than 100 pounds lighter, Betty Lou is medication-free, fitter than most people, healthy and now a world-class record holder.
The plank is an excellent way to strengthen abdominal muscles. This yoga pose can also strengthens arms and stretch your spine. Maintain the plank pose for 30 seconds to one minute to reap its health benefits.
To master the plank, check with a local yoga instructor or visit the Anytime Fitness Center in your community. In the Huntsville area, Anytime Fitness is located on Slaughter Road in Madison.
