49ers gay ad taken off TV amid controversy during Super Bowl 2013 week

The Super Bowl bound San Francisco 49ers appeared in an ad supporting gay rights, but that has been pulled from TV amid controversy, according to a Feb. 2 Fox 31 report. Apparently, defensive tackle Isaac Sopoaga and linebacker Ahmad Brooks were not aware they would be featured in the gay rights ad.

The advertisement supporting LGBT rights is called "It Gets Better." It appears as if the 49ers players were told that the advertisement was in support of bullying in general rather than specifically toward gay rights.

Earlier, the San Francisco 49ers had been praised for being the first NFL team to make an "It Gets Better" ad. However, because of the controversy, the ad has been pulled from the "It Gets Better" website.

Of course, neither Isaac Sopoaga nor Ahmad Brooks ever makes a statement specifically related to LGBT rights, so it is possible that they were not aware of what the commercial shot was for.

Between this and cornerback Chris Culliver's comments about not wanting a gay player in the Super Bowl locker room (he has since apologized), the 49ers have not been very helpful in furthering gay rights this week.

This 49ers gay ad controversy cannot have been helpful during this stressful Super Bowl week. The 49ers take on the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl 2013 in New Orleans on Sunday, Feb. 3 at the Cornerback Chris Culliver Mercedes-Benz Superdome at 5:25 p.m. CST. The game will be carried live on CBS.
