343 firefighters who perished in the World Trade Center collapse on Sept. 11, 2001, were honored by their brethren in events across the United States. In California, each participant climbed the Renaissance Tower stairwell in Sacramento four times, for a total of 110 floors each. According to CBS Sacramento on Sept. 11, 2013, the firefighters had the name of one of the fallen on their back during the climb.
The 5th annual event honored the 343 New York City firefighters who paid the ultimate sacrifice more than a decade ago.
343 firefighters were also remembered in another event on Sunday in San Diego. Firefighters, law enforcement, military, civilians and other first responders participated in the annual event. "The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb," was also held to raise money to help injured firefighter and their families.
The 343 firefighters were also remembered in events held in Richmond, Va., Boulder, Colo. and Kansas City, Ks. In Richmond they marched up to the SunTrust Center. In Boulder 19 firefighters climbed the 55 stories of Denver's CenturyLink Tower twice. The Kansas City-area firefighters held their event in Overland Park, Kan.
