Day three of 31 Days of Music is here and we go in yet another direction for #29. Giving new meaning to the term "southern rock" is Teen Getaway's debut record Hits and Missives (H&M) inviting you along on a hazy road trip through their music filled craniums.

Like the big bad wolf in granny’s clothing, Teen Getaway uses the beginning of the first track on H&M to lure the listener in with spacey melodies and Janet Simpson’s sultry voice. Leading them to believe all is well before revealing their true intentions of repeatedly smacking the listener in the ear holes with loud fuzzy guitar driven music that teeters on the line of genius and insanity.

The Birmingham band harnesses their inner ‘Bob Pollard’ releasing a debut album that more resembles a Guided By Voices record than the sounds coming from their fellow Alabama musical brethren. This chaotic adventure fails to disappoint as they roll through 13 songs at a blistering pace. No song sounds alike as they jump all over the musical stratosphere doing whatever they please. The rowdy “Explode!” is full of chunky guitars that resemble classic punk rock, with catchy hooks, “Spring Fever” wanders close to being a pop tune and “On Ze Floor” is a complete musical cluster f**k, and that is a good thing.

Highlighting the album is “God Save The Spleen” a guitar driven track (yes they all are) that is built around Simpson’s & Jim Fahy’s contrasting voices and “Cold Weathered Walls” a very melodic song that explodes into a mass of fuzz and noise at the end.

When the record is done spinning you don't need to try and figure out what the hell just happened, just enjoy the musical goodness that had been flowing into your ears. In a year loaded with a hell of a lot of good music, H&M is a record that deserves more attention that it has received, so give it a spin and spread the word.
