The PETA site has an excellent explanation of members' views on animal rights--that animals have an inherent worth, completely separate from usefulness to humans, with a will to live and a right to live free from pain and suffering. The animal rights movement challenges the traditional society view that all nonhuman animals exist solely for human use.
If you would not eat a dog, why eat a pig? "Dogs and pigs have the same capacity to feel pain, but it is prejudice based on species that allows us to think of one animal as a companion and the other as dinner." This writer's children had pet pigs which were obviously smarter than the family's several pet dogs. Pig intelligence is confirmed by PBS, ABC News, and The Humane Society. If you really must eat pork, at least buy it labeled free-range and be sure the pig has had a better life than in a tiny cage where it could not even lie down.
