2014 CMT Awards performers and winners recap

The star-studded 2014 CMT Awards took place on Wednesday night. Performers such as Eric Church, Hunter Hayes, Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan and Florida Georgia Line kept the show exciting from beginning to end. And while many of the CMT winners remained within the usual roundup of winners, there were a few pleasant surprises that made the entire event worth watching.

The CMT Awards were once again hosted by actress Kristen Bell who after jokingly lamenting that she didn’t have a co-host proved she wasn’t afraid to host the show alone–or to bring to it a bit of cable-ready humor that may have been questionable if presented on the major networks. All in all though, the audience seemed to laugh and have a good time, even through performances that some felt weren’t exactly “country.”

The opening number, for example, was a chaotic mixture of country and rap by Florida Geogia Line, Jason Derulo, and ZZ Top that seemed to have too much movement, too many bodies on the stage and too much inconsistency to really be enjoyed. The night picked up though with great performances such as one by Jennifer Nettles and John Legend singing a Hunter Hayes’ arrangement of “All of Me.”

The CMT Awards also boasted Little Big Town premiering their new song “Day Drinking”, Eric Church rocking out with Lzzy Hale of Halestorm to “That’s Damn Rock & Roll”, Lady Antebellum serving up some attitude with “Bartender” and Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood reviving their sass-filled Billboard Music Awards performance with a repeat amazing performance of “Something Bad.”

While the usuals such as Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert picked up the Male and Female Video awards, there were some sweet surprise moments such as Cassadee Pope receiving her first-ever award from Blake Shelton and Lionel Richie enjoying a country music award.

The complete list of 2014 CMT Awards nominees and winners follows, with the winners in bold.
