So there were no world records broken, and there was a broken feed during the live web cast of the 2014 Billabong XXL Awards.
Now that everyone is passed that, the good news is that all of the City National Grove of Anaheim attendees looked fantastic, and ASP made smooth strides by acquiring the rights to the Billabong XXL Awards. Most importantly, viewers bore witness to the intense sport known as big wave surfing, where contestants sometimes break bones in the attempt to shatter previous records. Pro surfers knowingly face life-or-death situations to become a nominee in any number of categories, arguably making these awards the most dangerously earned.
The night kicked off when a well-deserved tribute was paid to shaper, surfer, and Big Wave World Tour (BWWT) Founder, Gary Linden. This was followed closely by another award to Peter Mel for his influence as a big wave rider and official. Grant “Twiggy” Baker and Koa Rothman were seeing double vision when they received two awards each. Of course, the highlight came when Greg Long scored the Ride of the Year award for his ride at Puerto Escondido (Mexican Pipeline), Mexico, worth a whopping $50,000.
