A group of clowns in Mexico brought more than just balloons to a party this past week.
They brought guns.
That’s because the party was being hosted by drug cartel leader Rafael Arellano Felix and these clowns had it out for him.
According to the Telegraph on Sunday, Felix’s past of violence and unpaid debts may have contributed to his execution on Friday.
The 63-year-old drug mogul hosted a ritzy party at a beach house in Cabo San Lucas complete with celebrities and the colorful-faced entertainers.
Two men walked up to the multimillionaire criminal and shot him in the head and chest according to reports.
Both men allegedly fled in a getaway car with three other accomplices after shooting Felix in front of more than 100 people.
No leads or arrests have surfaced.
Felix and his brothers were at the forefront of the drug trade in the 1990s which included high-priced items such as cocaine. Together they ran the Tijuana Cartel for decades and racked up millions of dollars.
The cartel was also said to be responsible for kidnappings and fueling a criminal culture responsible for thousands of deaths throughout Mexico.
Rumors still remain saying that Felix and his brothers organized the death of the Archbishop of Guadalajara in 1993 and other mysterious deaths and kidnappings.
CNN reported that Felix was released from prison in 2008 after a 1993 arrest for selling cocaine. He was released from a U.S. jail for good behavior and went back to help run the business in Mexico.
Other members of the Felix clan were also imprisoned for money laundering while others were also killed by rival gang members.
"The Tijuana Cartel has been completely dismantled, with all of its leaders in prison either in the United States or in Mexico," said Raul Benítez, a drug trade expert at the National Autonomous University of Mexico according to the Telegraph.
The Arellano Felix cartel is less powerful currently due to the dwindling numbers and the introduction of newer and more vicious gangs in Mexico.
It has been reported that the cartel is being run by Felix’s sister and her husband known as “The Engineer”.
