2012 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show overdoes it with Rihanna and Justin Bieber

Promoters of the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show know a bit about society and putting on a spectacular event. In a world where 8GB iPods go out of style the day they are assembled, the Victoria's Secret people understand how to keep their product contemporary:

  1. Design something around which you can create a lingerie show featuring inconceivably physiqued supermodels.
  2. Make the exceedingly easy sell of your lingerie show to network television executives.

Enter the scandalously successful Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, thrilling audiences since 1995. But, since even revolutionary ideas and items pale over time (my daughter's Kindle never made it out of the box), the VS people know to throw in a relevant rock star or two.

If you've been on top of a Billboard chart, you've probably been invited to the VS fashion show. Recent appearances have been made by Usher, The Black Eyed Peas, Justin Timberlake, Usher again (no surprise; the guy will come to your Chick-fil-A opening if you call him), Katy Perry and Kanye West.

Whether the performance itself benefits from musical guests is debatable, though the big names surely draw attention and headlines. This year though, the Victoria's Secret people have outdone themselves. Performing this year at the supermodel lingerie show are Rihanna, Justin Bieber and Bruno Mars. Overkill, right?

Rihanna is likely there to help rehabilitate her image. After being assaulted by and taking back Chris Brown, nothing says road to recovery like participating in a Globally televised underwear show.

Justin Bieber managed to take time out of taking over the Universe to stop by. Victoria's Secret maintains their lingerie models are over the age of eighteen, and thus many of them had not heard of Justin Bieber, though did acknowledge he is as cute as a basket of ducklings.

Like getting nominated for a Grammy against Adele and Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars was invited so he could once again be upstaged by artists who are way, way more popular.
