This morning, the Department of Defense announced the deaths of two Fort Drum Soldiers, killed on the same day in separate attacks, in Afghanistan. Both Soldiers were members of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York.
Pfc. Christian J. Chandler, 20, of Trenton, Texas, died April 28, 2014, in Baraki Barak District, Logar Province, when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire.
He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light), Fort Drum, New York. There was no information regarding other Soldiers who might have been injured in this enemy attack.
In an unrelated attack, Sgt. Shawn M. Farrell II, 24, of Accord, New York, also died April 28, when enemy forces attacked his combat team with small arms fire. His unit was in Nejrab District, Kapisa Province. Information regarding injuries to other Soldiers has not been released.
Sgt. Farrell was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light), Fort Drum, New York.
The deaths of these Soldiers brings to 2,179 the number of U.S. troops killed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
