The new year will mark more than milestones in the modern day video game industry and anniversaries of many 1984 classics. A number of hit games will turn 20 years old in 2014.

The year of 1994 was a mile-a-minute era for video games. The 16-bit console war between the Super Nintendo and the Sega Genesis was in full swing as Nintendo battled back against Sega's aggressive advertising campaign with some snark of their own.

In the arcades, the coin-op scene was experiencing a bit of a second wind after titles such as Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat brought players back into gamerooms across the country. While some children of the original arcade golden days won't call these titles classics, those who grew up in the arcades of 1994 often disagree. In fact, some of the arcade hits of 1994 are still popular on modern home consoles today.
