2011 Winnipeg Fringe Festival: ‘A Show of Hands’

They can deliver babies and impersonate piranhas. They can re-invent history and re-make “Glee”. The local quintet of comedians that makes up Hot Thespian Action is back to the Winnipeg Fringe Festival for the fifth time. And trust me when I tell you this: The young artists are wild. But they are wild in a delightful way.

“A Show of Hands” is an hour of pure fun and non-stop, highly energetic entertainment. From “Paradise Lost” to “Love vs. Lust” and “How Rude,” the 16 short sketches expose and poke fun at our biggest flaws and most common misconceptions (homosexuality, among them) with a rare intelligence. This is razor-sharp and educational comedy performed with gusto, maturity and a great deal of passion.

While I was familiar with Hot Thespian Action because I live in Winnipeg, I had never seen any of the troupe’s shows. “A Show of Hands” was the perfect introduction. I laughed until I cried and left the theatre converted into a reverent fan.
