The Surgeon’s House was built in Jerome AZ in 1916. This gorgeous Mediterranean style mansion was residence of the chief surgeon for the town hospital next door. It has a spectacular view of the Verde Valley and downtown Jerome. The design included a live-in maids quarters and a chauffeur’s cottage in the rear.
The resident doctors and surgeons enjoyed a busy social life and loved to entertain guests when this was their home. Later the mansion served as a nurse’s residence. When the mines of Jerome closed in the 1950’s, the town of Jerome slowly transpired into a living ghost town. The mansion was abandoned and fell into a state of despair.
The mansion was added to the National Historic Registry in 1966 and has been the home of postmasters, mayors, councilmen, geologists. The current owner has restored the house back to its former elegance and operates it as an intimate bed and breakfast. The beautiful gardens on the grounds are a welcome retreat for her guests.
There are a few guests that frequently appear at the mansion who are not registered travelers. Some visitors have encountered a ghost of a maid they call Alice. Alice wears a blue uniform dress and is seen in the Maid’s Suite guest room. They speculated that Alice has taken on the maid’s job at the bed and breakfast to assure the guests are comfortable and enjoying their stay.
The owner of the Surgeon’s House has seen a spirit of a man wearing a suit walking into her master bedroom. He was carrying a doctor’s bag and walked nonchalantly into her master bathroom. He changed into his pajamas and faded into thin air as he approached her bed.
Guests in the master suite have witnessed the spirits of an enchanted couple dancing together for several minutes on a moonlit night. Was this the ghosts of the former doctor entertaining guests in their home on Hill Street once again?
