Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 might have busted sales records but it doesn't mean the community that plays it is all smiles.
Earlier this week, the add-on service Call of Duty Elite saw two new trailers featuring comedian Rob Riggle and looks at the new and upcoming maps. It didn't take long for gamers to react, as posts and blogs spread across the internet and the two YouTube videos saw the dislike button clicked by the thousands.
It's not clear if any one thing set this off, but the overall feeling is clear. Call of Duty is setting off the opinions of gamers across the map.
PlayStation 3 players that signed up for the Call of Duty Elite Premium service were upset to learn that the XBox 360 players still get the early releases of the new maps first. Others were upset that the new maps could only be played in heavy rotation in an Elite playlist. Still others expressed opinions about the maps or the Elite service as a whole.
Noted in a variety of blogs were complaints about the trailers themselves. One in particular claimed the new Elite trailers "set gamers back ten years" by making jokes and using colorful language.
As a gamer for 30 years now, I'm not sure where this writer thinks this. I think anytime you can get a mainstream celebrity to appear alongside a video game product it helps boost credibility with the mainstream groups that still paint gamers as basement dwelling nerds. Sure, Rob Riggle isn't exactly an A-list celebrity, and some people might see the name and think it's the lead character from Boogie Nights, but it's still a mainstream celeb. The ad did it's job in my eyes, and the language in the ad pales in comparison to the childish drivel I hear in most CoD lobbies anyway.
That being said, I'm now opening the floor up to everyone else to give their opinions. What's grinding your gears in relation to Call of Duty right now? You can talk about Elite or the new maps or even Mr. Riggle if you want, but please, try to be constructive in your remarks as well. Check your spelling, try to sound civil, and justify your opinions with specific complaints based on facts.
