The cult success of The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters has been followed by a small army of documentary films on video game competition and history.
The latest, titled Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters, is set to debut with a screening at the 2011 Austin Film Festival, taking place from October 20-27 in Austin, TX.
Ecstasy of Order's roots go back to the original Nintendo World Championships 1990, a multi-city national championships tour that kicked off that spring in Dallas, TX. The event, which featured Tetris as the very important final game in the contest, was eventually won by Thor Aackerlund.
Following a great deal of press and endorsement deals following the major win, Aackerlund vanished from the gaming scene shortly thereafter, leaving behind a legendary competition win and rumors of a max-out 999,999 score on the NES version of the puzzle classic.
The film then explores the personalities and background of the various modern-day Tetris champions and contenders and they prepare for to the World Tetris Championships in Los Angeles. The event features a long list of Tetris champions ranked by official scorekeeping organization Twin Galaxies such as Harry Hong and Jonas Neubauer, both of which have officially verified 999,999 scores. These masters of the Nintendo Entertainment System version of Tetris are set to battle it out and declare a Tetris champion when rumors that Aackerlund will return and enter begin to stir.
The Austin Film Festival began in 1994 and has since become one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world. It currently lists Ecstasy among a short list of films being promoted for the event.
The exact date the film will be screened during the festival is not yet set, but will appear within this space and PatrickScottPatterson.com when the date is announced.
