Walmart assistant manager refuses to give up food scraps in garbage pail to help feed rescued animal

BROOKSVILLE -- The current recession has hit the Tampa, Florida area hard. In addition to thousands of people losing their homes to foreclosure, record numbers of pets have been starved and abandoned.

Among the victims are horses, many of whom have been dropped off in state parks to fend for themselves after their owners could no longer afford to feed them, according to Animal Control and police reports.

When a Brooksville Walmart assistant manager was asked by local residents for some corn husk scraps to help feed a rescued horse, he refused. The scraps were in a garbage pail.

Questions about the denial were raised because just days earlier, a generous donation of the same food scraps was cheerfully given by other employees at the same store. They had no objection because "it was just going to be thrown away."

Amid claims of being a ‘friend to the community’ the Brooksville Walmart assistant manager named Tom, who stated that company policy forbid him from giving his last name, was asked why giving away the corn husk garbage was now forbidden.

“We already have someone who comes to pick that up,” Tom said, referring to the 3 garbage pails full of corn husks in the produce department.

Tom remarked that other Walmarts might give their garbage away, “but we don’t do it at this store.”

Another management level worker named Kerri, who also refused to give her last name, concurred.

When asked to produce documentation regarding who was collecting the garbage-bagged food scraps, Tom said, “We don’t have that information.”

According to Tom and Kerri, the matter of the Brooksville Walmart's corn husk scraps are of such great importance to the corporate giant chain store, the pair of management level employees threatened to arrest and press criminal charges against anyone caught removing so much as a single scrap of food from their garbage pails.

I think this is a corporate mandate. It was when I worked at a W-M, and I thought it was stupid then.
I wonder what Wal-Mart corporate offices think of this? Great article.

It's not corporate mandate, but more likely health code worries. The same reason pizza places throw prank orders in the dumpster instead of donating them. Even giving them to another customer with the same order can get them in trouble. With the size of fines often involved, health inspectors aren't particularly sympathetic if violations are for a noble cause.

There is a health code for humans, because giving away food is a liability. Jimmy Johns throws its bread away at night, despite many efforts to give the food to people in need. This is a familiar theme with many places that sell food.

The health requirements for animals and humans are very different, however. Thus refusing to donate the husks to animals in need is inexcusable. Walmart has proven yet again that are only out to make a profit, instead of making a difference.

I saw an article a few months back when Walmart got caught tearing up articles of perfectly good clothing that never sold. They were found out back in the dumpsters. Someone in the media did a story on this and Walmart was shamed into apologizing and reviewing its policy to trash clothes instead of donating to the needy!

This sounds very similar. I say we inundate that Walmart and ask for those two ASSISANT managers to be reprimanded. Shame Shame! Also call the corporate office. I did so once when I was having problems with someone there and believe me, I got satisfaction quickly after it came from CORPORATE OFFICE MGMNT (REGIONAL MANAGER)!

Next time I will go to another store like Target or Big Lots or Kmart. Theres many places to shop so Walmart better straighten up its act or they will lose customers and their goodwill.

People are always going to find a reason to complain about Wal-Mart, but they will still shop there, funny how that works. Wal-Mart, like most large corporations have polices set in place like this to try and prevent panhandling. The managers were just protecting their jobs (they were most likely given the orders higher up) when not giving away the scraps, in the eyes of the corporate world, it could be considered theft and their jobs could have been at stake. I would have done the same thing, you aren't going to try and "shame" me into risking my job for a few scraps of produce. Wal-Mart already has donation procedures set in place that are approved by corporate headquarters. If people are this concerned about a horse, then go buy some food and donate it yourself.

Are you kidding me??? DONATING TRASH to provide livelyhood of an ANIMAL has NOTHING to do with PANHANDLING!!!!! It's called being GENEROUS, a word Walmart should look up in the dictonary! The Walmart corporation and MOST, not all, of it's higher ups (and the ones that "think" they are higher ups, are nothing more but a bunch of GREEDY selfish MONEY HUNGRY MF's. I NEVER shop there..I shop at Target, MUCH CLEANER & BETTER! TO HELL W/WALMART!

If they started giving away produce scraps some people would be going in there and purposely husking corn just to get the scraps, they'd purposely damage produce so it couldnt be sold in the damaged condition and then try to get it for themselves for free or a severely reduced price. It's sad that there are crooks out there that ruin it for the ppl who are actually in need. Same thing in the restaurant business. 9 times outta 10 if a meal is made incorrectly and sent back to the kitchen to be recooked the manager will throw away the food. If they didnt servers would purposely be ringing in the wrong items just to get free meals. The same principle applies in this situation.

Does anyone remember Adam Sandler's character in "Big Daddy", he purposely dented cans against the floor to get them at a reduced price. People will purposely damage products if they think they can get it cheaper. I am all for donating produce that is about to ruin but only to reputable charities. Corporations have to protect themselves and if they started giving away all their damaged produce to anyone who asked their profits would dwindle drastically - produce is easily damaged.

walmart is a great company and to those who do not know your local walmart store and walmart distribution donates thousands of dollers several times a year to causes such as childrens miracle network, relay for life, and several local scholarships for students. Anyone who says walmart is only for walmart is obviously ignorant and does not know what they are saying. Maybe there is a reason why the corn husks are not allowed to be given away but instead of finding out the reason you just start trash talking about things you do not know of .

and furthermore walmart does donate products to local charities. it donates damaged plants and veggie plants to local charities, these comments upset me so much because i know first hand the good walmart does for the community because i myself have donated to these causes through walmart. we at walmart work so hard to help others and the fact that so many of you do not know the good walmart does frankly makes me sick, in stead of putting walmart down, why don't you get out there and make a difference the way walmart has, such as volunteering and donating to charity. i am probably wasting my time by explaining any of this to the people who are ignorant of ways walmart has helped the community, because you are people who just want to complain about the ways of others but ask yourself when was the last time you made a difference in the community other than to bitch about others

What is sad about this whole thing is the animals. Horses being left to starve because we can no longer give trash aways. BUt what is even more disappointing is the fact that we all would like to sit here and blame the SUPER GIANT. Walmart is so bad we blame anything and everything on Walmart. We as consumers did this. Everyone walks through the doors of Walmart and see dollar signs. If someone falls on their neighbors sidewalk because of ice they go in the house and put some ice on it. DO the same on Walmarts sidewalk and we got a $500.00 /hr lawyer on retainer looking to make a buck. Feel bad for the horses but feel bad because we as a greedy race have made it so that one of the worlds biggest givers to its community now has to be careful with its trash.....bravo

Another reason to boycott WalMart. They bankrupt companies by demanding they sell them products at less each and every year or risk loosing the business. Hense why alot of companies have had to move their production to foreign countries. They just like other big box stores like PetsMart, would rather throw good food that would save a life in the dumpster. Big boxes stores are alot of the problems in this country. Wake up America boycott them all. Go back to the small Mom and Pop stores that gave birth to this wonderful country. Then maybe the country will return to what it was originally. Yes people are people and some will do things to get a lower price. But if a manager has any common sense and intelligence they can figure out how to handle each and every situation and make sure if something is usable to get it where it can be used without causing the company any problems. That is because I do it each and every day. No a thing will go to waste if your intelligent enough.

When I was a kid in elementary school in Roswell, garbage from what we didn't eat at lunch was given to local farmers as feed for their livestock. That doesn't happen anymore because of health concerns. Restaurants cannot give to anyone else what you don't eat. That's why I don't like places such as Dahlonega's Smith House.
Slamming Walmart is ridiculous when health codes mandate that food not be given away.

I'm looking forward to a day when businesses aren't so worried about protecting their trash and allow it to be put to a use besides landfill. There's not really any such thing as waste when it comes to produce.

MOST OF THEIR ASSOCIATE HATE WORKING FOR THEM, THEY KEEP THE TEMP IN THEIR STORES AT 78 DEGREES, AND KILL THEIR ASSOCATIES, NO AIR IN THEIR BACKROOMS AT ALL. AND HAVE MERGED DEPTS. TOGETHER FORCING EVERYONE TO WORK HARDER WITH NO EXTRA PAY SO THEY CAN LOOK GOOD TO THEIR STOCKHOLDERS.

I can't believe any store would rather throw away corn husks than give them away to a place where they would help! Shame, shame on you Wal-Mart. You will never get another dime from me!!

Wow it never ceases to amaze me how ever so opinionated ppl are when it comes to Wal*Mart. Did these two managers make a bad judgement call? Maybe. Would I personaly let the customer have the husks? Probably. After a quick call to my Store Manager to CMA. Working for the largest retailer in the world is kinda crazy though ppl. You have to think about every aspect and repercussions of your decisions. If for example this customers horse fell ill after eating said husks. We as a company would be liable...We live in a very litigious society unfortunately...I see it everyday at work. Also as a company we donate all of our bakery, deli and meat department soon to be out of date products to Feed America 3 times a week. Literally thousands of dollars of food per store to be distributed to local food banks and homeless shelters. However some ppl it seems are just set on trashing Wal*Mart. To each their own :)

    on Wal*Mart's China web page!

"Wal-Mart China persists in local procurement which provides more job opportunities, supports local manufacture industry and promotes local economy. So far, 95% of merchandising sold at Wal-Mart China store are local products by which Wal-Mart has established business relations with nearly 20,000 suppliers. At Wal-Mart, we treat suppliers as partners and would like to develop with them. In 2008 Wal-Mart won the Supplier Satisfaction published by Business Information of Shanghai for five consecutive years."

    5% foreign in China...

That doesn't support American exports and American jobs.

Remember what Lance Winslow wrote in that article "The Flow of Trade in a Global Economy"....

"Now let us look at Wal-Mart again; you buy a product there, 6% goes to the employees, 10-18% is profit to the company, 25% goes to other costs and 50% goes to re-stock or the cost of goods sold. Of the 50% about 20-25% goes to China, a guess, but you get the point. Now then, how long will it take at 433 Billion dollars at year for China to have all of our money, leaving no money flow for us to circulate? At a 17 Trillion dollar economy less than 40-years minus the 1/6 they buy from us. Some say that if we keep putting money into our economy, it would take forever, but if we do not then eventually all the money flow will go. If China buys our debt then eventually they own us, no need to worry about a war, they are buying America, due in part to our own mismanaged trade, so whose fault is that? Not necessarily China, as they are doing what's in the best interests, and we should make sure that trade is not only free, but fair too."

Think for a moment about George Washington....yes the man that is on the US dollar bill....How do you think George feels being sent overseas in return for all that foreign so-call cheap items and being left in a foreign bank because the American worker doesn't make anything for the foreigners to buy. Cheap items didn't make this great union of 50 states the greatest place on the face of this Earth.....the American worker (union and non-union) did.

You can't have a strong country without having a strong currency and you can't have a strong currency unless you keep it floating around within your 50 states. This is why the store with the star in the name puts 95% China made items in their stores in China....to keep their "yuan" in their country helping the nice people there. And with only 5% left for all the other 182 country's that make stuff including the United States of America....that doesn't produce very many jobs outside of China.

Being an old person myself and knowing how it was back in the 40's, 50's and 60's in this union of 50 states....I look at George each time I pull him out of my billfold and make a promise to send him out for items made in America so after floating around helping each hand he touches just maybe one day he will shake mine again.

Fifteen cargo ships pollute as much as 760 million automobiles.

$9 billion a year in hidden taxes to all American taxpayers to clean fish from ballast tanks of ships...

think about all those facts the next time you pull that George out of your pocket....

    Retail makes NOTHING...

    Governments only make MORE DEBT...

It's time for less of those two and for America to get back to what it does best....MAKE STUFF..

cause George Washington on that dollar can't help anyone in the United States of America if he is being held in a foreign hand.

Made In America is the only way out of this mess cause foreign made put US here.

Wal-Mart is an easy target, understandably. I also understand how people might feel about not giving scraps away . Unfortunately its not as easy to give away stuff as one might think. There are liabilities involved. In fact Wal-Mart does donate billions of pounds of food to food banks every year. The store I work at alone sends pallets of food regularly to the local food bank. Giving away stuff carries all kinds of liabilities . There are laws and policies in place that forbid giving away stuff to individuals. Lots of scraps are tossed because of FDA and local guidelines. Its a waste but its the law. Look it up. If you want a donation from a wal-mart for a specific cause there is paper work that must be filled out and approved by the store manager. The horse should have been turned over to local humane officials. Wal-mart is not in business to feed stray animals that people find.If you cannot afford to feed it then turn it over to someone who can.
