Valerie Hayes' first successful animal welfare campaign, at age 8, was to convince her parents to adopt a dog. After studying biology at Cornell, she volunteered at the Tompkins County SPCA and witnessed its miraculous transformation from being a high-kill to a no-kill shelter.
