Grace's Law, H.B. 788 goes before the Rules Committee on Monday March 8, 2010 and urgently needs your support. If you are a Georgia resident and have not yet called your representative, the Georgia Voters for Animal Welfare and other concerned citizens urge you to do so today. If Grace's Law passes the Rules Committee, it will go before the House of Representatives for further consideration. If it dies in committee, thousands of shelter pets will die tortuous deaths by the gas chamber in Georgia for at least another year.
Phil Draughon, the man who adopted Grace in 2006, and who cares for her to this day, wrote this of her ordeal:
After the Liberty County Animal Control staff put Grace in the chamber, turned on the gas, went to lunch, came back 30 minutes later, and took to the gruesome task of cleaning out the chamber so it can be used on the kittens next, they discovered something they weren’t prepared for: Even after being in there for THIRTY MINUTES, Grace was still alive, still conscious, salivating, shivering in terror and covered in feces from the dead dogs above her. The very thought revolts me even today. Thankfully, a member of the Liberty County Humane Society was in the building, and heard about what had just been discovered. She took the dog to her own vet, and there Grace began her recovery.
He consulted with one of the world's leading authorities on carbon monoxide poisoning, toxicologist Dr. David Penney of Wayne State University:
He quickly replied and told me that “dying by carbon monoxide is definitely NOT painless or comfortable. We know this from both human and animal data. Various readily-available medications would likely be much less painful and unpleasant than CO.”
He goes on:
I have a lifelong friend in the Richmond County Sheriff’s Department who once told me that discovering suicide victims who have died by CO poisoning are the most gruesome things he’s ever called upon to do. He sees bloodied fingers trying to claw their way out of the car sending the clear signal that they died in agony.
This is no way to treat man’s best friend, and this animal control department--along with many others in Georgia--was doing it routinely.
The horrors of the gas chamber are an entrenched habit at the 11 or more remaining gas chambers in Georgia. Unless concerned citizens act now, this disgrace will continue for at least another year.
Concerned Georgia residents should call the Rules Committee office today at 404-656-5141. Politely tell them that you are a Georgia voter and you would like for them to vote 'yes' to put Grace's Law, H.B. 788 on the calendar to be heard by the full House of Representatives. If you have not yet done so, please call your representative and ask for their support of Grace's Law, H.B. 788 as well. Detailed instructions are available here.

`Where do we sign against this heinous crime!?
There is no petition and nothing to sign at this time. If you are a Georgia resident, CALL your Representative, and the Rules Committee office first thing Monday morning March 8th. The Rules Committee goes into session tomorrow morning and will decide if Grace's Law moves on to the next step or if animals will be gasses in GA for another year. Instructions are in the article above.

Please stop euthanasia on healthy animals :(
I see Grace's Law as a means to end the abuses inherent in the use of the gas chamber and 'heartstick' injections to kill shelter pets. That is why I support it and urge others to do so.
I too would like to see the end of killing healthy and treatable shelter pets, but legislation to accomplish that is not up for review at this time. I support the No Kill Equation, the only proven way to build No Kill communities and end needless shelter deaths (and the vast majority of them are needless--90% of shelter pets are healthy or can be rehabilitated). The Carroll County Humane Society is sponsoring a free seminar with Nathan Winograd on just this topic. It will take place in Douglasville, GA on April 16, 2010. See my articles on this exciting event (more articles planned--stay tuned).
